Candy Kingdom Defense Evolution Guide

Evolution is the longest-term progression system in Candy Kingdom Defense. The official description names four results outright: you can "EVOLVE your heroes into Alien Jake, Adult Finn, King BMO and more". Those four names are the game's own roadmap, and they tell you which heroes the developer expects you to build around.

The Enchiridion

The Enchiridion is the book that does the evolving, and the interface calls it exactly that: 1. Enter the Enchiridion, with the subtitle "Evolve heroes at the book of heroes!" and a page counter reading PAGES 20.

The panel has three parts:

  • ADD A HERO, a slot marked with a plus sign, and next to it a slot showing ???. That is the target form. Until you have added a hero, the destination is unknown.
  • MATERIALS, a list on the right with the rule written across the top: "Add 1 to the hero for every 2 identical items", with the panel also noting that the row needs the same item five times over.
  • EVOLVE!, the button that commits the materials.

Underneath, the panel spells out the rule that catches new players: every evolution raises the hero's level, and items are wasted in the early evolution stages. The listed stages are Common, Uncommon, Rare, Epic, Legendary and Mythic.

Evolution consumes items permanently

The materials are consumed when you evolve, and the panel warns that items are wasted in the low stages. A hero that is not going to be carried through several stages should not be fed into the book yet. Check the required material count before you commit a stack of items.

The Four Named Evolutions

Hero Evolved form What it tells you
Jake Alien Jake The starter hero has a defined endgame form, which makes him the safest long-term investment in the game.
Finn Adult Finn The other starter hero also has a named evolution.
BMO King BMO A support character with a named form, so his role scales rather than just his numbers.
Marceline Marceline Beast A damage character with a named form, which is where the damage builds go.

The pattern is clear once you line them up: the two starters and the two damage dealers all have named evolutions. That is a deliberate structure, not a coincidence. The developers built the evolution system around the heroes they expect to be played.

The "and more" in the description matters too. It means the four named forms are not the entire set, which is exactly what you would expect from a game with the Nightosphere and the Crystal Dimension still to come.

Where the Materials Come From

Every match pays out evolution materials. The 2x Drops gamepass description lists what drops from a run: "evolution items, Trait Crystals, Enchiridion Pages, XP candies and more". So there are three different currencies feeding the same progression, and they are not interchangeable:

  • Evolution items — the duplicate hero pieces the Enchiridion consumes. They come from matches, and duplicates are what makes the "2 identical items" rule work.
  • Enchiridion Pages — the book currency, listed in the inventory next to Units of Juice, Trait Crystals and XP Candies.
  • Units of Juice — the feeding currency. The RELEASE code pays 5 of them.

That is the reason a big part of the game is duplicates. The system wants you to pull the same hero more than once, which is why the reroll economy and the summon economy are connected, and why the reroll guide matters as much as the summon economy.

Start from the units guide to decide which heroes deserve the materials, and use the stages guide to find which stage pays the items you need.

The Order to Evolve In

Evolve the hero you are already using. An evolution raises the hero's level, so evolving a bench hero gives you a levelled bench hero.

Feed the hero before you evolve it. Levelling is free with XP Candies; evolution spends materials. Do the free thing first.

Stop at Mythic. The stage list ends at Mythic. If a hero has reached Mythic stage, further investment should go into traits and levels instead.

Keep one duplicate of everything. The "2 identical items" rule means a hero with one spare copy cannot evolve at all. Holding a second copy of each hero you intend to evolve is the cheapest insurance in the game.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do you evolve a hero in Candy Kingdom Defense? Open the Enchiridion, add the hero to the slot, supply the required identical items, and press EVOLVE.

What are the Candy Kingdom Defense evolution stages? Common, Uncommon, Rare, Epic, Legendary and Mythic, listed in the Enchiridion panel.

Which heroes can evolve? The developer names Jake into Alien Jake, Finn into Adult Finn, BMO into King BMO and Marceline into Marceline Beast, plus more.

Do evolution items get consumed? Yes. The panel states that items are wasted in the lower stages, so the materials are spent.

Is evolution better than rerolling? Evolution raises the hero's stage and level for materials. Rerolling raises a stat for crystals. They are separate budgets, so the right order is to evolve first and reroll second, since a reroll on a Mythic-stage hero is worth more than a reroll on a Rare one.
