Candy Kingdom Defense tier list ranked by rarity, role and trait synergy, with Finn, Jake, Marceline, Lemongrab and the evolved forms explained.
Candy Kingdom Defense Tier List
This tier list ranks Candy Kingdom Defense heroes by what actually decides a wave: the rarity you pulled, the role the hero fills in a six-unit squad, and whether the trait on that hero does anything you need. Rarity alone is a poor ranking, because the same hero with a different trait can be worth two slots instead of one.

How This List Is Built
Every hero in the game is judged on three things:
- Base rarity. The game labels units Common, Rare, Epic, Mythic, Legendary and Prime, and each unit in your inventory carries a star count that encodes it. A Finn at Rare, LV.1 with one star is the clearest example visible in the game.
- Role. Six slots, so a hero that only deals damage competes with heroes that change how the other five behave.
- Trait. The trait list is long and specific, from Sharp at 18% drop rate down to Oh My Glob at 0.2%. The traits guide has the full table.
The game does not publish unit stats or summon percentages, so this ranking is a judgement built on the rarity labels, the role language in the official description and the trait list in the game itself. It is a recommendation about who to invest in, not a spreadsheet of damage numbers.
S Tier: The Squad Anchors
Jake is the anchor for most accounts, and the reason is simple: he is the higher-rated starter option, he is named first alongside Finn in the developer's description, and he has a named evolution, Alien Jake. A hero whose evolution form is advertised by the developer is a hero whose power curve the developer expects you to build around.
Marceline, in her evolved Marceline Beast form, is the other anchor. Marceline is one of the four characters with a named evolution, which means she has a defined endgame version rather than a flat stat line.
Lemongrab belongs here despite being an antagonist in the story, and the reason is in the official description: the enemy wave includes "Lemongrab's sour army". A character who exists as a boss threat is a character whose kit is built to punish the things that come at you.
A Tier: The Specialists
Finn and Adult Finn are the best value heroes in the game for a new account, because the developer names Finn's evolved form explicitly and Finn is available on the very first screen. Finn is not a rare pull and he does not need one.
BMO, in King BMO form, has the most distinctive role in the roster. The character reads as a support rather than a damage dealer, which makes him the hero you want when your squad is hitting a wave that damage alone will not solve.
Princess Bubblegum is the fourth character with a named evolution path, and her role is the flexible one in the game's design.
B Tier: The Fillers
Lich and Magic Man are the units the game's own hero card grid shows alongside the main crew. They are legitimate pulls and they will hold a slot, but they do not have the named evolutions that mark the S and A tier in the developer-facing material.
Flame appears in the grid in several card variations, which suggests it is a family rather than a single unit. Multiple versions of one thing usually means one of two things: either it scales well with investment, or it is a workhorse you will eventually have too many of. Either way it is a roster filler, not a squad anchor.
C Tier: The Bench
Everything Common that comes out of the Treasure Hoard belongs here. The game is generous with low-rarity pulls, which is normal for a gacha layer built to feed a reroll system. A Common hero is not worthless, it is a body for an early squad and a donor for feeding.
The units guide covers the roster and the rarity ladder in full, and the evolution guide covers how a hero climbs from Common to Mythic through evolution stages.
How to Use This List
Early, before you have many heroes: build a squad of whatever you have, prefer Jake and Finn, and do not spend Gems chasing a specific hero. The beginner guide covers the opening hour properly.
Mid-game, once you have a squad: reroll rather than summon. A Mythic trait on a hero you already own is worth more than another Epic hero, and Trait Crystals are cheaper than pulls.
Late-game, once you have evolution materials: the evolved forms are the real tier list. Alien Jake, Adult Finn, King BMO and Marceline Beast are where the developer has put the game's power.
The trait odds run from 18% down to 0.2%. You cannot control what a summon gives you, but you can control the trait on a hero you already own. That makes a reroll on a good hero a more predictable investment than a pull.
Frequently Asked Questions
Who is the best unit in Candy Kingdom Defense? Among the confirmed roster, Jake and Marceline lead, and their evolved forms, Alien Jake and Marceline Beast, are the strongest versions the developer has named.
Is Finn a good unit? Yes. Finn has a named evolution, Adult Finn, and is available from the first screen, which makes him the cheapest strong hero in the game.
What is the rarest unit in Candy Kingdom Defense? Prime is the highest rarity label used by the game, above Legendary and Mythic.
Does a rare hero always beat a common one? Not in a squad of six. Role and trait decide a wave, so a well-rerolled Rare hero can out-perform a badly-rerolled Legendary one.
How do I make a unit stronger? Level it with XP Candies, feed it duplicates, reroll its trait with Trait Crystals, and evolve it with materials. The evolution guide has the details.
